Looking for Canada heritage and awareness months 2024? Here’s an overview of the months to help you celebrate and promote inclusion.

Canada Heritage Months celebrate different ethnicities during different months. They are times to celebrate specific heritages and educate the general public about their history, achievements, and contributions to Canadian society.

Canada Awareness Months are similar to heritage months except they honor a certain cause or medical condition during a specific month. Here we will explore some Canadian awareness and heritage months 2024.

Canada Heritage Months 2024

Tamil Heritage Month – January

The Tamil community is an ethnic group that primarily originates from Southern India or Sri Lanka and practices a variety of different faiths including Jainism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. Celebrate the Tamil harvest festival called Thai Pongal this month too.

Francophonie Month – March

March celebrates one of Canada’s official languages, French, and the diverse Francophone cultures worldwide. It honors the resilience and traditions of Francophone communities across Canada.

Sikh Heritage Month – April

This month, learn about the traditions of the Sikh community and their significant impact on Canadian society. Use April as a time to better understand cultural diversity and those around you.

Asian Heritage Month – May

The month of May serves as a chance to learn about the contributions of Asian Canadians. Since the late 1700s, people have immigrated from Asian countries to Canada. In fact, Chinese immigrants helped to build and maintain the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Jewish Heritage Month – May

This month, celebrate the history and culture of Jewish Canadians. Learning about their diverse heritage and religion allows us to better understand those around us. This month, commit to learning about how to fight antisemitism.

Filipino Heritage Month – June

Filipino Canadians are one of the largest immigrant communities nationwide, with a significant presence in Ontario. Learn about their rich heritage and the achievements they have made to Canadian society.

Italian Heritage Month – June

Canada has over 1.5 million Canadians of Italian descent, making it one of the largest migration places in the world. This month, learn how to make an Italian recipe like Baked Ziti to celebrate their culinary heritage.

National Indigenous History Month – June

Indigenous Peoples is a name to describe the original people of North America along with their descendants. The Canadian Constitution recognizes three different groups: First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. More than 1.8 million Canadians identify as Indigenous.

Portuguese Heritage Month – June

Celebrate the early Portuguese explorers and immigrants, particularly fisherman, who contributed significantly to Canadian society, especially in Newfoundland.

Canadian Islamic History Month – October

Islam is the fastest growing non-Christian religion nationwide. This month, learn about Islamic heritage as well as Islamic holy days.

Canada Awareness Months 2024

Black History Month – February

This month, understand the history of Black Canadians. Learn about important historical figures like Lincoln Alexander, the first Black Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and Willie O’Ree, the first Black hockey player in the National Hockey League.

Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation, and Prevention Month – April

Remember the victims of genocides and learn about these horrific historical events. It’s time to commit to working together as a society to create a world where these atrocities can be prevented.

Pride Month – June

This month-long celebration recognizes the LGBTQ+ community, their history and the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance of all gender identities and expressions. It’s a time to memorialize those lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS.

Women’s History Month – October

Women’s History Month is a great time to learn about the contributions of women and girls to Canadian Society like Rosemary Brown, a social justice advocate and politicians along with Canada’s first Black female of a legislature. This month coincides with the celebration of the anniversary of the Persons Case, which established that Canadian women were eligible to be appointed in positions of political power.
