Sikh: Bandi Chhor Divas – November 1

The second most important Sikh festival of the year celebrates the prison release of the Sixth Guru and 52 other princes. After he was released, he returned home during Diwali. Thus, now his freedom is associated with Diwali every year. Many believers take a pilgrimage to Sri Harmandir Sahib,  the holiest site in Sikhism.

Baha’i: Birthday of the Bab – November 2*

Today we honor the Baba, who Baha’is believe was the messenger of God. He came before Baha’u’llah, the proper founder of their faith.

Rastafarian: Anniversary of the Crowning of Haile Selassie – November 2

Today marks the day that Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. Believers see his rise to power as the realization of Marcus Garvey’s prediction that a Black king would redeem Black people. Note that Haile Selassie was Christian and never personally identified with the faith.

Jain: Gyan Panchami – November 6

This day is dedicated to learning about the importance of secular and spiritual education. Today, Jains read scriptures known as the Agamas to receive enlightenment. Their goal is to achieve liberation from the ongoing cycle of birth and death.

International Day For Tolerance – November 16

Established in 1996, this day promotes respect for the world’s cultures, languages, and religions. Today is a day to educate the general public about the need for universal human rights for all humans.

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day – November 19

Also known as Survivor Day, the event is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a program that unites survivors globally. Stand alongside survivors and their families as we come together to understand through shared experiences today.

Native Women’s Equal Pay Day – November 21

Today, we learn that Native women must work nearly 23 months to earn the same salary as white, non-Hispanic men do in one year.  This wage disparity is enlightening and deserves public awareness. Educating others about this discrepancy ensures that the pay gap fight continues worldwide every year.

Jewish: Yom Kippur: October 12*

The Day of Atonement is one of the holiest days in the Judaism. It’s a time to seek forgiveness and to repent for sins committed throughout the year. Most people wear white on this holiday – married men usually wear a white robe called a kittle.

Pagan and Wiccan: Samhain – October 31*

This significant Celtic holiday marks the end of the harvest season and the start of winter. In its history, Celtic tribes held assemblies where the rulers and warriors made laws.

This diversity day coincides with the federal holiday Columbus Day and honors the culture, contributions, and history of the Native American, Indigenous, and First Nations Peoples. By promoting their rich heritage and remembering the challenges they have faced in their history, we help promote a better understanding of all world cultures.

International Pronouns Day – October 16

International Pronouns Day is focused on gender inclusivity and promoting the proper use of pronouns to respect someone’s chosen identity. It hopes to educate the public on the importance of personal pronouns in affirming someone’s gender expression. Today, have open conversations for better understanding and acceptance among your friends, loved ones, and colleagues. First celebrated in 2018, it hopes to educate about personal pronouns and how being referred to as the wrong pronouns affects someone’s mental health.

International Overdose Awareness Day – October 31

Today is the world’s largest yearly campaign to help end overdoses. It’s a great time to remember those we have lost without the stigma behind drug addiction. Listen to personal stories and acknowledge the grief of both family and friends who were left behind. This day highlights the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. Hindu: Ganesh Chaturthi – September 7

Vinayaka Chaturthi is a Hindu festival that honors Lord Ganesha, the deity of wisdom and prosperity with an elephant head. This festival typically lasts for about 10 days where rituals, prayers, and performances are held to bless him. On the last day of the festival, idols are immersed in water, which symbolizes him leaving to return back to his heavenly place.

Hindu: Pitru Paksha – September 17

This time pays tribute to the ancestors through rituals, known as Pitrs. During them, it is believed that the souls of the ancestors visit Earth, and these performances bring peace to their souls. Kheer, a sweet rice and milk dish, lapse, a sweet porridge, and lentils, vegetables, and rice are all frequently enjoyed after this celebration.

The Ghost Festival is a time when it is believed that the gates of the afterlife are opened, allowing spirits to return to the world of the living for a brief period. The festival is marked by rituals aimed at pleasing these spirits, including offering food, burning incense, and presenting various forms of entertainment. The purpose is to honor ancestral spirits and provide them with comfort, ensuring they do not cause problems for the living.

Hinduism: Krishna Janmashtami* – August 26-27

This Hindu festival celebrates Lord Krishna’s birth and fasting, and devotional singing is common on this day.

International Day of People of African Descent – August 31

This day was established by the United Nations to celebrate the rich heritage and contributions of people of African descent worldwide, and to promote the full inclusion of people of African descent in all aspects of society. Starting in the month of Muharram is considered one of four sacred months in the Islamic faith.

Bahá’í: Martyrdom of the Báb – July 9

The Martyrdom of the Báb commemorates the anniversary of the Báb’s execution in Persia in 1850. The Báb is considered the herald of the Bahá’í Faith, whose teachings paved the way for the revelation of Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá’í Faith. It is one of the nine holy days in the Bahá’í Faith when work is suspended.

Buddhist: Asalha Puja – July 21

Asalha Puja, also known as Dhamma Day, is a Theravada Buddhist festival which takes place on the full moon of the eighth lunar month. It commemorates the Buddha’s first teaching after his enlightenment.

Black Hair Independence Day – July 3

Also known as National CROWN Day, this day aims to raise awareness about the CROWN (Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act. It’s a law that prohibits racial discrimination based on hair texture and protective hairstyles, such as braids, locs, twists, and knots, in workplaces and public schools.. The initiative addresses racial biases and aims to foster acceptance of natural hair. California was the first, enacting this law in 2019, and since then, 17 states have followed suit.

International Non-Binary People’s Day – July 14

This date was chosen as it’s the halfway point between International Men’s Day and International Women’s Day. This awareness day is dedicated to better understanding those who don’t fit into the traditional gender binary. Dedicate some time to understanding gender identity and pronouns this month. As of 2024, 18 U.S. states allow individuals to choose a non-binary option, marked as X, on their driver’s licenses.

Nelson Mandela Day – July 18

This day honors the legacy of Nelson Mandela, focusing on his contributions to peace, freedom, and democracy. It encourages people to dedicate 67 minutes to volunteering or community service, symbolizing Mandela’s 67 years of public service. It’s a global call to action for people to embody the spirit of Mandela in working towards conflict resolution, democracy, and human rights.

National Disability Independence Day – July 26

National Disability Independence Day commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) into law in 1990. This day is a powerful one for the rights of people living with a disability in the workplace and beyond. It celebrates progress made in ensuring that equal opportunities, access and inclusion for all people exist in employment and public spaces.

The Hajj * – June 15 – 19

This annual pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is mandatory for all Muslims physically and financially able to do so to undertake once in their lives. It is a time of reflection as Muslims across the world gather to celebrate their faith and also those making this journey.

St. Peter and St. Paul Day – June 29

This day remembers the apostles Peter and Paul and the role that they played in the church’s early history. Services to remember these two saints are held today.
