Hindu: Navratri – October 3 – 12
One of the largest Hindu festivals honors the Goddess Durga who destroyed the demon Mahishasura after battling him for nine days and nights. This is one of two separate Hindu nine-night festivals celebrated throughout the year. The day is enjoyed with worship at the temple, sacred scriptures recitation, and dancing.
Jewish: Rosh Hashanah – October 3 – 4*
The Jewish New Year is the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, ten days of repentance and introspection known as the Days of Awe. Communities come together to pray and blow the shofar, a ram’s horn.
Jewish: Yom Kippur: October 12*
The Day of Atonement is one of the holiest days in the Judaism. It’s a time to seek forgiveness and to repent for sins committed throughout the year. Most people wear white on this holiday – married men usually wear a white robe called a kittle.
Pagan and Wiccan: Samhain – October 31*
This significant Celtic holiday marks the end of the harvest season and the start of winter. In its history, Celtic tribes held assemblies where the rulers and warriors made laws.
