Understanding Diversity Calendar Icons: The Moon Icon

In the Diversity Calendar, you may notice a moon icon Moon iconnext to certain religious observances. This icon signifies that these holidays begin at sundown and continue until the following evening.

Why is this important?

For several faiths, including Islam, Judaism, the Baha’i Faith, and Pagan & Wiccan traditions, days are traditionally counted from sunset to sunset, rather than midnight to midnight. As a result, holidays in these religions begin in the evening and end in the evening.

How does this affect our calendar events?

To accurately reflect these traditions, our calendar lists the holiday on the date of its main observance, with the moon icon indicating that it actually begins the previous evening. This approach helps avoid confusion and respects the proper timing of these observances.

For example, if a holiday such as Yom Kippur begins at sunset on October 11th and ends at sunset on October 12th, our calendar will list it on October 12th, with the moon icon to show that the observance starts the evening before. This method ensures that the information we provide aligns with the traditional practices of these faiths and helps prevent misunderstandings.

Our goal is to present information that is both accurate and respectful of diverse cultural practices. The moon icon is just one way we aim to honor these important observances.

If you prefer to show the events on the date when it starts in the evening, you can change it in the admin panel under Company Profile, or simply contact us.
